When can cultural selection explain adaptation?

چکیده

Abstract Cultural selection models aim to explain cultural phenomena as the products of a selective process, often characterising institutions, practices, norms or behaviours adaptations. I argue that lack attention has been paid explanatory power frameworks. Arguments for frequently depend on demonstrating only can in principle be applied culture, rather than explicitly payoffs could arise from their application. Can Neural Adaptation Explain Word Choice?

Speakers refer to objects using terms on various levels of description. Labeling a poodle, they use the subordinate term “poodle” or the basic term “dog”. Our model attributes these effects to visual context, relying on the domain general mechanism of neural adaptation. Two SOMs represent visual and auditory categories. Word learning is modeled via simultaneous presentation of item and word for...

Strong selection barriers explain microgeographic adaptation in wild salamander populations.

Microgeographic adaptation occurs when populations evolve divergent fitness advantages across the spatial scales at which focal organisms regularly disperse. Although an increasing number of studies find evidence for microgeographic adaptation, the underlying causes often remain unknown. Adaptive divergence requires some combination of limited gene flow and strong divergent natural selection am...

Condition-dependent sexual selection can accelerate adaptation

Sexual selection is responsible for much of the spectacular natural diversity of mating traits. It is unclear, however, how this powerful evolutionary force affects the evolution of traits unrelated to mating. Four recent theoretical studies have argued that sexual selection might increase the rate of adaptation, but each relies on the assumption of a substantial positive covariance between mal...

Can settlement in natal-like habitat explain maladaptive habitat selection?

The study of habitat selection has long been influenced by the ideal free model, which maintains that young adults settle in habitat according to its inherent quality and the density of conspecifics within it. The model has gained support in recent years from the finding that conspecifics produce cues inadvertently that help prebreeders locate good habitat. Yet abundant evidence shows that anim...

Can selection explain the protective effects of farming on asthma?

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE Reduced asthma and allergy risks in farmers have been ascribed to microbial exposures. However, selection may also play a role and this was assessed in two Scandinavian farming populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Asthma prevalence in 739 Danish farming students was compared to that of 1,105 siblings. 8,482 Norwegian farmers were also compared with 349 early retired f...
